On December 29, the Central Zoo celebrated its 29th anniversary under the management of the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC). A significant milestone, the event also commemorated the recent cabinet decision to extend the zoo's management tenure to NTNC for the next 30 years. To formalize this decision, an agreement was signed at the event between the Member-Secretary of NTNC Dr. Naresh Subedi and the Director-General of the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation Dr. Ramchandra Kandel.
The occasion was observed in the presence of distinguished attendees, including, the Hon. Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri, Minister of Forests and Environment and Chairperson of NTNC; Hon. Durlabh Thapa, Member of Parliament from Bhaktapur; Mr. Chiribabu Maharjan, Mayor of Lalitpur Municipality; and Dr. Deepak Kumar Kharal, Secretary of the Ministry of Forests and Environment, among senior government officials, heads and experts of conservation organizations, students, teachers and media persons.
Participants at the event reflected on the zoo's journey over the past three decades, important gains made along with new visions for leading ex-situ conservation best practices in Nepal, together committing to support NTNC's improved stewardship of the zoo for the next 30 years.
